Binge Eating Disorder: Breaking the cycle of bingeing and guilt.
What binge eating disorder looks like, where to find support, and the treatment approaches that help people recover.
Binge eating disorder involves recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food in a short period, often to the point of discomfort. Signs include eating much more rapidly than normal, eating large amounts when not physically hungry, and feeling disgusted or guilty afterward.
Overeaters Anonymous (OA) and National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD) provide supportive communities. Many cities also have local eating disorder support groups.
Treatment often involves a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy, nutritional counseling, and sometimes medication. Dialectical behavior therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy can also be effective. Ongoing support through groups like OA can be crucial for long-term recovery.
