About Addiction

Exercise Addiction: When a healthy habit turns compulsive.

What exercise addiction looks like, where to find support, and the treatment approaches that help people recover.

Exercise addiction involves a compulsive need to exercise excessively, often at the expense of physical health, relationships, and other life responsibilities. Signs include prioritizing exercise over other activities, exercising despite injury or illness, and experiencing withdrawal-like symptoms when unable to exercise.

While there isn’t a large organization specifically for exercise addiction, some find support in Overeaters Anonymous (which addresses all forms of compulsive behaviors around body image) or general addiction support groups.

Recovery typically involves cognitive-behavioral therapy to address underlying issues, developing a balanced approach to exercise and health, and sometimes working with a nutritionist or physical therapist. Addressing any co-occurring eating disorders is often crucial.
