About Addiction
Prescription Drug Addiction: When the prescription becomes the problem, help exists.
What prescription drug addiction looks like, where to find support, and the treatment approaches that help people recover.
Prescription drug addiction can involve various medications, including opioids, benzodiazepines, and stimulants. Signs include using more than prescribed, “doctor shopping” for multiple prescriptions, and withdrawal symptoms when not using.
Pills Anonymous (PA) provides a community specifically for those addicted to prescription medications. Many also find support in Narcotics Anonymous (NA) or general addiction forums.
Recovery often involves medically supervised detox, followed by a combination of therapy (such as cognitive-behavioral therapy) and support groups. For some medications, tapering under medical supervision may be necessary.
